The Speech Vowel Set ã
ABOVE: Grumpy Mum says "Uh - uh- uh", Dirty Bert says "Er - er - er" , Pirate Mike says "I - I- I." The Speech Vowel Set ã is a set of 21 sound pictures that represent the vowel phonemes of English, with a focus on Australian pronunciation of vowels. It was created in response to the lack of Australian resources targeting vowel sounds. As many therapists know, vowel sounds can be extremely difficult for some children to produce, particularly those with verbal dypraxia. The more cues we can give a child (visual, mental, auditory) the more chance they have of producing the target sound. The Speech Vowel Set ã fosters an interest in the characters' sounds - it actually makes them fun. Teaching vowel sounds can be explicit, yet enjoyable. For children with auditory processing difficulties or impaired phonological processing, vowels can also be extremely difficult to distinguish from one another. This often impacts upon reading and spelling. The Speech Vowel Set ã allows the teaching of vowel sounds in a way amuses the child, holds their interest and assists their learning. Some of the Uses:
"Clare Fairy was a hard
sound. Now I can do her. I flap my wings too. " Ben has verbal dyspraxia. He kept saying the "ah" sound for the "air" sound. (Eg. stars for stairs). We worked on this during therapy, by practising the Clare Fairy sound while doing her Hand Sound (which is the action of flapping imaginary wings). After this was mastered, Ben learnt to say words like "bear" "stairs" and "it's not fair" by flapping his wings as he said the "air" sound within these words. In time, the wing flapping was dropped as the motor pattern was cemented). Click here to see Clare Fairy. The pictures represent AUSTRALIAN pronunciation of vowels. Pictures from other countries do not always relate to Australian pronunciation due to accent differences.
Above: Images appear in a number of formats: including JPEG format so the pictures can be used just like Clip-Art ; insert into documents, duplicate, resized and so on... When I used to visit schools, I had to carry boxes of materials in the car. Now I just take a small folder of disks and print out pages when I need to." Sally Rankin, Speech Pathologist, Victoria. |
