As teachers of literacy, it is important to try and look at learning to read and spell from a bottom-up approach  (child's view) rather than a top-down approach (a literate adult's point of view).

We need to know sounds inside out and back to front to be able to talk about them explicitly to children. Having a good understanding of speech sounds and their features, can help us  figure out why certain errors are occurring in a student's writing attempts.  An understanding of sounds is called PHONEMIC AWARENESS .

Phonemic Awareness can be taught and  is an integral part of every good early literacy program.
