Pelican Talk Speech Therapy Resources provides a range of resources for schools.
They are currently being used in all states and territories of Australia.
In some schools, certain programs have been adopted as programming tools
to be delivered to the whole class whereas other programs are used
to
address individual goals for students with speech and language disorders.

Above: Many of Pelican Talk's resources can be displayed on an interactive
whiteboard (eg. SmartBoard)
Pelican Talk's resources are extremely useful for teachers and integration aides (inclusion support) who are assisting
children with specific speech and language impairments.
Do you have students who are still
saying "w" for "l"? ("I wike you")
Show them the Lovely Lara sound, point to her tongue and practise saying
her sound. Then show the students the Wonderful Worm sound. Talk about how
the sound is different, and the mouthshape is different too. You'll be
surprised how a little awareness can go a long way to change speech
patterns. This is part of "phonemic awareness".

Pelican Talk products address
not only speech,
but also the
three vital skills for early literacy
development. These include:
1. Phonemic Awareness (See
Here)
2.
Oral Narrative (see Fun with Sequences
and Language Scenes)
3. Letter - Sound Correspondence
(see
Speech Sound Set
and Speech Vowel
Set and
Monkey Sounds)

Dirty Bert's sound is taught using a
Hand Cue and a story.
Later children learn all the spelling options for this sound (ir, er, ur,
or) and a handy workbook can be photocopied for each student.
Teacher tips are given about when to use certain spelling patterns (eg.
"or" is used to make Dirty Bert's sound after the letter "w"). At
all times, children are encouraged to think about the distinction between
sounds and letters. Dirty Bert is part of
The Speech Vowel Set.
The Speech Sound Set and The Speech
Vowel Set contain a character for every consonant and vowel sound,
Hand Cues, a "story" and
the spelling options for each. An example page of from the SPELLING
OPTIONS booklet from THE SPEECH SOUND SET can be viewed
here.
