Learning about sounds for both speech and literacy is
made fun with the Speech Sound Set characters. Kids
explore each sound in a fun way using pictures, "speech play"
and stories.

Used with 2 year
olds - 12 year olds!
The Speech Sound Set
uses a multisensory approach to sound awareness...
The program
encourages kids to:
- *think about the sound
- *feel the sound
- *watch how the sound is
made
- *hear the sound
- *compare the sound to
other sounds.
They are also encouraged to
learn the most common letter correspondence for the sound.
"Letter-sound
knowledge is prerequisite to effective word identification. A primary difference
between good and poor readers is the ability to use letter-sound correspondence
to identify words". (Juel, 1991)
Later
in the program, they learn that for
each sound, there are many spelling options.

the LETTER OPTIONS booklet .

SPELLING: tips for the /m/ sound.

Some of the Uses
*to help
a child learn to produce a new sound
*to increase a child's awareness of speech
sounds, how they are made and how they differ from other sounds
*to increase a
child's conceptual understanding of letters versus sounds
*to increase
phonemic
awareness (is being used in childcare centres, preschools and schools in
general programming)
*to learn sound-letter links and the
associated patterns and rules (teachers love the MAKING SENSE OF SPELLING
booklets)
*used with children who are struggling with early
literacy, particularly with reluctant learners
*used in specific speech pathology intervention
addressing dyspraxia, phonological delay, tongue-tie and many other speech
disorders
*used as a handy
guide to speech development norms - what to expect when.
THE SPEECH SOUND SET and SPEECH VOWEL SET spark an interest in
phonemic awareness. Why is this so important for literacy?

This
program is unique in that all the characters have mouthshapes that
reflect the mouthshape required to make their sound.
There are so many facets
to this program which are provided all one one CD-ROM...

- worksheets to print
- flashcards to print
- pictures to view
- spelling tips to learn
- colour-ins
PLUS SO
MUCH MORE!

Many primary school
teachers have commented that the program has taught them so much about
sounds and how they relate to literacy development. The program helps
teachers identify why students make certain errors with particular
sounds.

There's a
Speech VOWEL Set
too that studies all the vowel sounds in depth.
