Here is a set of 27 characters that represent all the consonant phonemes of English. The Speech Sound Set ©   is used in schools, preschools and speech pathology centres in every state of Australia.  It is used with young children who have speech impairments and also as a wonderful early literacy teaching tool.

The Speech Sound Set ©  is used by speech pathologists, teachers, teachers' aides  and parents.

 It is suitable for children aged 2 - 12 years.

Here's Gulping Gary...and here's Zippy Zac...

The unique feature of The Speech Sound Set © is that the characters' mouths resemble the mouthshape required to make their sound.

Characters encourage children to think about mouthshapes!

Gulping Gary has his tongue down at the front and moves the back of his tongue up to make a gulping sound.   Zippy Zac keeps his teeth closer together and makes a long buzzing sound. Furry Fred (above) sticks his top teeth out and makes a blowy sound.

After familiarising students with each sound using fun characters, students are encouraged to learn the most common letter correspondence. Later they learn that for each sound, there are many spelling options.

Some of the Uses

-used as part of speech pathology intervention to help a child learn to produce a new sound

-used to increase a child's awareness of speech sounds,  how they are made and how they differ from other sounds

-used in whole class programming to increase phonemic awareness

-used in the learning of sound-letter links and the associated patterns and rules

"Letter-sound knowledge is prerequisite to effective word identification. A primary difference between good and poor readers is the ability to use letter-sound correspondence to identify words".   (Juel, 1991)

- used with children who are struggling with early literacy, particularly useful with children who have become reluctant to attempt early literacy tasks

-used in specific speech pathology intervention addressing dyspraxia, phonological delay, tongue-tie and many other speech disorders.

-used to help teachers in their programming, particularly when teaching about each sound and their spelling options (grapheme-phoneme correspondences).
